Use of the web site

You must be at least 18 years of age to use this web site. Bookings you make must be for yourself or another person or persons for whom you are legally entitled to act. You will remain responsible for the security of your account and you will be liable for the cost of any bookings made using your account, irrespective of whether you made those bookings personally, or whether they were made by another person using your account log-on details. We therefore recommend that you keep your log-on details safe and secure.

Cancellations, amendments and refunds

Whether a ticket can be cancelled for a refund or amended is determined by the terms and conditions of the ticket and other conditions set out in the National Rail Conditions of Travel. The over-riding condition in the National Rail Conditions of Travel which applies to all tickets is that the original tickets must be returned within 28-days of the expiry of the validity of the ticket. takethetrain.co.uk cannot be held responsible for tickets which are lost or delayed in the postal system and will not be able to refund any tickets not received within these time limits. We therefore recommend that customers use a fast and secure method of delivery such as Royal Mail Special Delivery. Conditions specific to the ticket type which you purchased are also set by the train companies and these conditions are notified to you during the booking process but you can also find an overview by clicking here.

If you wish to amend or cancel your ticket, please contact us. You can find our contact details here. We will check whether your ticket can be amended or cancelled before processing the request. For amendments it is necessary for us to charge a nominal fee to cover our cost to process the request. For cancellations we must charge a cancellation fee, part of which is required by, and passed on to the train operating companies to cover their cost as the tickets ultimately go back to them for authorisation and approval.

Where a refund is due, we have to abide by strict guidelines set out by the train operating companies. This is to protect their revenue as we are effectively refunding their money, not ours. In most cases, we cannot process a refund without having the original tickets returned to us and where this is required by the train operating company we will request that you send them to us. You accept that you are responsible for the cost of posting tickets back to us. The train company is ultimately responsible for deciding whether a ticket is refundable or not, their decision is final and we cannot process a refund without their permission. Please note that if you are applying for a refund because you have not received tickets in the post, you must inform takethetrain.co.uk at least 24-hours prior to your outward travel date. We cannot refund any amount if you inform us after this time.

If you have experienced a delayed or cancelled train and believe you are entitled to a refund, we will make the refund if we have permission from the train operator. If we are not granted permission, we will give you the train operators contact details to enable you to contact them direct.

Any refund that we make in respect of any other reason shall be no more than the cost of the tickets purchased. When you receive your tickets or collect them from a Ticket on Departure machine, please check to see that the tickets reflect what you ordered and that they are valid for the train and service you wish to use before boarding the train. In the event that you board a train with a ticket without the relevant validity, you may have to pay the appropriate fare on the train and a penalty fare may also be payable. You are responsible for ensuring that you use the right train and service for the ticket you have purchased.
